Wiesbaden as an attractive place for education and higher education

Wiesbaden is a lively centre of education and higher learning with more than 14,000 students. In addition, there are vocational schools offering a variety of training courses, from plant mechanics to social education professions.

Our universities in Wiesbaden are key drivers of our city's economic, social and cultural development. Universities are places of ideas, encounters and shaping the future. They secure and create jobs, drive innovation and enrich local life: research and teaching address issues from the region and develop new ideas for the future. This makes them valuable partners on the path to a sustainable, fair and liveable city. Everyone who trains and studies here brings a breath of fresh air to our city and is living proof that Wiesbaden needs more opportunities for young people. We Greens want to open doors and make it easier for those who want to contribute their creative ideas.

We Greens want to actively support their development and thus contribute to Wiesbaden remaining an attractive location for education and science – and at the same time a city where young people enjoy studying, researching and living.

What politics means for us in terms of an attractive location for education and higher education

Strong knowledge transfer

The exchange between universities and the city is a reciprocal process: Universities gain impetus from urban society and the city benefits from expertise, advice and innovative approaches from research – in solving social, transport and environmental issues.

Good framework conditions

In order for Wiesbaden to remain an attractive university location, we are committed to the further development of the campus of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, to the promotion of joint projects and a better visibility of universities as part of the urban education landscape.

Housing for students

Many students take long journeys from the surrounding area to Wiesbaden, as they can not find affordable housing here. To ensure that studying and living do not fail due to high rents, more student dormitories are needed in Wiesbaden.

Educational opportunities also for the elderly

Education and age belong together for us. Educational offers in old age must be based on the individual curriculum vitae and the living environment of older people. We want to support the Academy for the Elderly in Wiesbaden as a network of educational institutions in Wiesbaden in the coordination and development of new offers.

What we want to do specifically in this area

We want to specifically address the lack of affordable housing in Wiesbaden. Many young people who study or train cannot afford market rents. That is why we are creating additional, affordable housing options for students and apprentices in order to offer them a reliable perspective in the city.

In order to achieve this goal, we want to support the Studierendenwerk and other institutions more strongly in the construction of new residential spaces. Urban housing associations should also make a clear contribution to the creation of affordable housing for students and apprentices. In doing so, study-related offers for childcare should be considered. In addition, we actively support the Studierendenwerk in the search for suitable plots of land for new dormitories. A concrete project is the development of a student and trainee residence on the edge of the newly created Alsace Park in cooperation with the Studierendenwerk.

We GRÜNE want to intensify our cooperation, especially with the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and Fresenius, in order to make even greater use of the potential of the departments for sustainable further development. To this end, we are strengthening the university staff in the state capital.

Young people can already participate in the shaping of political decisions via the Youth Parliament (JuPa), the City Students Council (SSR) and the City Youth Ring (SJR). In the future, we also want to work on ways of involving student representatives such as the AStA in our universities.

The healthcare industry faces major challenges in attracting qualified professionals in the coming years. We would therefore like to examine the establishment of a health campus where doctors, nurses and other health professions can be trained together. A location in close proximity to a Wiesbaden hospital would enable a close connection between theory and practice.

RheinMain University of Applied Sciences bundles its departments at the Kurt-Schumacher-Ring campus, where it needs space for future developments and much-needed student housing. Since the fire station 1 is located on the site of the corresponding development plan and is itself in need of renewal, a new location for its new building is to be found. The current location could then be made available to RheinMain University of Applied Sciences.

We support university sports in getting more time in urban gyms. It is important to us that the halls are optimally utilized and that the clubs also receive sufficient time. We are committed to a digital tool that allows those responsible a transparent overview and easy reservation of free hall times.

As the previous cooperation between the Asta of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and nextbike expires, we are committed to ensuring that a rental bike offer is maintained in the city. We check whether the state capital can continue the rental bike offer with Nextbike or another provider.

We want to support the Academy for the Elderly in Wiesbaden as a network of educational institutions in Wiesbaden in the coordination and development of new offers.

For a lively student nightlife in Wiesbaden, we continue to advocate for a night mayor. This position is intended to connect gastronomy, culture, administration and local residents, reduce conflicts and create new impulses for the club and cultural scene. We also want to make the event calendar of the city of Wiesbaden mobile experienceable in the ‘Alles Wiesbaden’ app and thus further increase the visibility of the culture.

Public transport must also bring young people reliably to the city and back in the evening. The nightliners of ESWE Verkehr connect the city centre and suburbs safely and cheaply, enable visitors to enjoy leisure and cultural activities and ensure that all young people, apprentices and students remain mobile regardless of their place of residence and budget. We want to make sure of that.

What we have already achieved

We Greens have helped to ensure that more than 40 million euros have been invested in the existing vocational school campus. In this way, we have not only modernised vocational schools, but also made them fit for the future. As a result, the importance of Wiesbaden as a training location has been strengthened and the number of training places not only remains, but can also be expanded.

In various construction projects, such as the Kulturcampus, urban and architectural variants for a realization could be presented as part of a cooperation with the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. The future work in the Luisenforum, in which smart solutions for our city are developed together with citizens, is enriched by further impulses from the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences. Series of events such as ‘Science finds the city’ and student exhibitions, among others, increase the visibility of the university in the city. Both universities are also members of the industry advisory board initiated by the city of Wiesbaden, a municipal body for a binding dialogue between politics, administration and industry. Led by our Green Representative and Mayor, the Industry Advisory Board brings together companies, chambers, trade unions and academia to work together on a sustainable economic transformation. Instead of individual interests, the focus is on cooperation, climate protection and securing skilled workers.

In 2025, it was possible to move into a new dormitory with an affiliated day care centre in Hollerbornstraße. In cooperation between the state, the city, the Studierendenwerk and the university, a new dormitory with more than 400 places was opened in 2025 at the new university quarter on the Kurt-Schumacher-Ring campus. The integrated kindergarten makes it easier to study with a child.

Through the construction of business apartments in Herderstraße, a model project for apprentice housing and the construction of company apartments on the grounds of Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken (HSK) by GWW, we secure affordable housing for important professional groups, promote retention of skilled workers and show that the city of Wiesbaden is responding strategically to the needs of the labour market.

The WiTECH Alliance was launched in January 2024. It connects Wiesbaden-based tech and IT companies and promotes innovative, digital projects. This creates a strong local technology ecosystem that supports founders, start-ups and companies alike and strengthens the city as a digital innovation location.

The Opportunities Platform was launched as part of the WI WORK LIFE ⁇ Industry Skills Initiative in 2022. It offers citizens digital support in education, training and careers and facilitates access to job offers, further education and apprenticeships in Wiesbaden.

The training radar was introduced in 2025. Through this digital platform, companies can recommend suitable applicants who they cannot recruit for capacity reasons to other Wiesbaden-based companies. In this way, training opportunities in the region remain transparent and easily accessible.

The Forum Talent Initiative Industry was founded in 2022. It connects professionals digitally and supports companies in finding and promoting talent. At the same time, it facilitates professional exchange between industry, educational institutions and organisations in order to strengthen the retention of skilled workers in Wiesbaden.

With its home port in the Old Court, the city of Wiesbaden is promoting a start-up centre in the immediate vicinity of the Fresenius University. RheinMain StartUpLabs, the founding initiative of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, is also involved in Wiesbaden's start-up ecosystem.
