sport

Sport is more than exercise – it is crucial for the physical and mental health of all ages, quality of life and social cohesion in our city. Sport is ubiquitous, from the banks of the Rhine to the city forest, with recreational sports, or top-class sports. Sports clubs and recreational sports facilities create important social spaces in which a wide variety of people come together. Every year, Wiesbaden presents itself as a sports city with sports events of national importance.

Political decisions in Wiesbaden have a direct influence on how sport can be lived on site: They determine the financing, construction and maintenance of sports facilities, access to swimming pools and halls, the support of clubs and the promotion of popular sports as well as top-class sports.

Sports activities create social spaces in which people of all generations and cultures come together, succeed in integration and children and young people acquire important skills. Every day, volunteers invest their time in a functioning sports business. Volunteering contributes to the sport, but without good conditions through the city, it can not work. A strong sports infrastructure makes Wiesbaden attractive as a place to live and work and presents us as a sports city with charisma far beyond the region.

What sport means to us

Healthy, fit and modern

Sport strengthens physical and mental health and prevents diseases. People of all ages benefit from functioning, publicly accessible and modern sports facilities.

Community living

Sport in the district, in the city forest, in public spaces and in the club promotes integration, tolerance and mutual understanding between people with different life stories.

Youth promotion

Sport offers children and adolescents pleasure in exercise as well as valuable leisure activities and imparts important motor and social skills.

Sport for everyone

Barrier-free, non-violent and non-discriminatory sport enables all people to participate inclusively in social life.

Ecology and sustainable sport

Ecological sports facilities with sustainable care and management, events and environmentally friendly mobility to sport protect our natural resources.

Promotion of democracy

A functioning grassroots and competitive sport in its diversity is made possible by the commitment of many volunteers. The fact that people engage in sports clubs as coaches, board members, as support at club festivals or through other voluntary activities in the sports club is a lived democracy. This commitment must be appreciated and promoted.

What we want to do specifically in this area

We invest in the refurbishment of existing sports facilities and create new capacities. We pay attention to energy-efficient construction, greening, expansion of PV systems, barrier-free access and modern equipment. Clubs should be able to plan reliably and receive training times tailored to their needs.

We want to provide well-equipped school sports halls and qualified sports facilities for the all-day area. We support the promotion of cooperation between schools and clubs in order to bring children closer to diverse sports, to discover talents and to strengthen the young people in the clubs.

We want to have more outdoor fitness equipment, skate parks, basketball courts, boules courts, calisthenics facilities, table tennis tables and running tracks built in parks and residential areas. These low-threshold offers allow spontaneous movement without association membership and appeal to all population groups.

Voluntary commitment, for example in the board of directors, when organizing club parties, as referees or coaches, also deserves the greatest respect for sport. To ensure that people continue to engage, we support institutions such as the Bürgerkolleg, the Wiesbaden Foundation or the Volunteer Centre so that volunteers receive qualifications and support.

In addition, we continue to advocate for direct sports promotion, especially for the promotion of grassroots sports and the promotion of young talent.

We invest in the availability of swimming pools for schools and clubs for swimming lessons. We make it easier for children and young people to access the swimming pools in Wiesbaden with inexpensive tickets. We are committed to a replacement of the Kostheim indoor pool.

We support and network associations in the development of barrier-free offers and the training of trainers for people with disabilities. Special subsidies help with the purchase of appropriate sports equipment and with the structural adjustments. We want to promote the support of our associations in the development of offers especially for queer children and young people. We promote integration initiatives for refugees and people with a history of migration in sport.

We want to improve the accessibility of sports facilities by public transport, bicycle and on foot. Safe bike paths, sufficient bicycle parking spaces and an improved public transport schedule in the evenings are intended to facilitate the accessibility of sports activities for club members without a car.

In order to be able to set up the Wiesbaden sports sector in the long term, we want to have a sports development plan drawn up: to this end, the existing sports opportunities should first be shown in an inventory in order to then develop a sustainable plan for sport by means of scientific support, close involvement of the clubs and citizen participation.

Interest in e-sports – the sporting, organised competition with computer games – has grown significantly worldwide in recent years. E-sport has evolved from a niche culture to a global form of entertainment and is also increasingly recognized as a serious sport in Germany. We want to promote e-sports clubs and present Wiesbaden as a host city for future e-sports competitions.

What we have already achieved

A new, modern and efficient sports hall for school and club sports was built in Wettinerstraße. The barrier-free, energy-efficient hall benefits the entire vocational school centre, but also numerous Wiesbaden sports clubs with new, attractive training and event options. With the high-quality equipment of the athletics area, the sports facility has laid a foundation stone for successful competitive sports from Wiesbaden.
With the start of the new Rheinhöhe building, an exemplary sports facility is being built in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency, which makes swimming, saunas and ice skating possible all year round. The sports venue will be easily accessible by public transport and will enrich Wiesbaden with an attraction.

Two places were converted each year. In doing so, rubber granules are dispensed with, which reduces microplastic brib. Compared to hard courts, artificial turf courts protect the joints and reduce the risk of injury.

In response to violence among players and in dealing with mostly voluntary arbitrators, a task force was established in 2023 to address the issue of violence. Misdemeanors are collected. Violence is reported and the clubs are held jointly liable.

Freely accessible sports facilities have been built at various locations in the city, where people can train free of charge. These include calisthenics and skate facilities, workout parks and sports boxes with various small equipment for rent.

Since December 2023, children and adolescents up to the age of 18 have been able to swim free of charge in many of Wiesbaden's swimming pools during all Hessian school holidays. The offer is valid for the outdoor and indoor pool Kleinfeldchen, the leisure pool Mainzer Straße, the outdoor pool Kallebad and the outdoor pool Maaraue.
